Copper producer Consolidated Copper Corp (CCC) has appointed Tim Flynn as group security head and Robert O’Neill as chief compliance officer to support the company’s operations and growth in Namibia.
In the fourth quarter of last year, CCC restarted the processing of London Metal Exchange A-grade copper cathode at its Tschudi operation for the first time in four years, a key milestone in the rejuvenation of Namibia’s copper industry.
“As the scope, scale and opportunity of our operations grows, so must our operational security and compliance across everything we do. [Flynn and O’Neill’s] experience will be critical in ensuring we continue upholding our commitments to our employees, to the local communities, to the Namibian government and taxpayers, and to our investors.”
“Namibia has the potential to rival the great copper mines of the Central African Copperbelt and CCC will support this,” CCC CEO John Sisay said.
Flynn has more than 30 years of federal, state, and local law enforcement experience in the US. He served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a special agent in Miami, Florida, and was a member of the hostage rescue team in Quantico, Virginia.
Flynn also served as the FBI counterterrorist representative to the Australian government for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, as well as three other Olympic games and major events.
He was also the FBI’s legal attaché to the Nordic countries and retired as an executive in the FBI’s Charlotte, North Carolina, field office. Flynn has led executive protection teams for top executives and board members in the US, Asia, Africa and South America.
In his new role at CCC, Flynn will be responsible for overseeing and managing all security operations to protect CCC assets, employees and facilities.
“I am excited to be working with [Sisay] and everyone at CCC, from the offices to the mine sites and all points in between, to develop and implement best practice in our security policies, procedures, and protocols, ensuring compliance with all legal and industry standards.
“My experience in complex environments, from landmark locations to international events, will help us create tailored solutions for every setting,” Flynn said.
Flynn will be working closely with O’Neill.
After serving as a former state and federal prosecutor, O’Neill was appointed US attorney for the middle district of Florida, twice, by Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama.
O’Neill has extensive experience as a trial lawyer, investigator, crisis manager, and leader, including public service as an associate independent counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel in Washington, Virginia, where his primary responsibility was to act as trial counsel in a case involving allegations of public corruption.
Additionally, O’Neill was assigned to the role of deputy chief in charge of litigation of the narcotic and dangerous drug section at the US Department of Justice in Washington.
He will be responsible for ensuring CCC operates in accordance with all legal, regulatory and ethical standards. He will design and implement the compliance programmes to mitigate risks and promote transparency throughout the company’s operations.
“We will develop not only the necessary legal and governance frameworks, but the right mindset and corporate behaviours to set new standards for the mining industry,” O’Neill said.
“With [Flynn and O’Neill] joining CCC, we’re strengthening our team with deep experience and proven leadership. Alongside impeccable credentials in their respective fields, they are both accomplished businesspeople, with records of aligning multiple legal entities and commercial organisations with their obligations and stakeholder responsibilities.
“As we approach key milestones, I’m confident we’re better positioned than ever to deliver on our vision of responsible copper,” Sisay said
