The City of Windhoek in collaboration with Mobile Telecommunication Limited (MTC), Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) and Namibia National Reinsurance Corporation (NamibRe) is on a mission to restore the city to its former glory and reclaim its title as the cleanest city in Africa through the Windhoek Clean-up campaign.
The campaign which will be launched on 18 August 2022 and run for the next three months, aims not only to restore the city’s dignity but also to change people’s minds and hearts about cleanliness. “We don’t just want this to be a one-day event where we clean up and go; we want it to be different in the sense that it changes our mindsets about how we see cleanliness and what our responsibilities are,” said Tim Ekandjo, MTC’s Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer, during a courtesy call on Mayor Sade Gawanas this week at Town House.
The campaign will also incorporate elements of fun and education. A theme song will be played at the launch, and as people sing along, they will be reminded of the importance of cleanliness. Various schools in Khomas will also be involved in the campaign. The partners have committed over N$ 750 000 towards the campaign, with MTC contributing N$ 400 000, City of Windhoek N$ 200 000, EIF N$ 100 000 and NamibRe N$75 000 plus planting trees.
Mayor Sade Gawanas expressed her excitement and full support for the campaign, emphasising the importance of ensuring sustainability while also creating opportunities. “We want the city to take over its number one position but I’m hoping with this one, we can start making people understand the importance of a clean environment while also creating opportunities,” she said.
