Norwegian deepwater driller thrilled about prospects in Namibia

Norwegian deepwater driller Odfjell Drilling is looking to capitalise on its position in the hot-spot of Namibia where it sees rising demand from existing and new oil and gas company clients, as well as opportunities in neighbouring South Africa.

The semisubs Deepsea Mira and Deepsea Bollsta drilled for Total Energies and Shell, respectively, offshore Namibia during the fourth quarter of 2023, while the semisub Hercules worked for Galp Energia in Namibia. All three rigs are managed by Odfjell on behalf of the rig owners.

Kjetil Gjersdal, chief executive, said in a quarterly results call on Thursday there have “been some fantastic discoveries made in that region” and Odfjell was receiving new inquiries from oil and gas company customers including “new clients who are looking for rigs in that region”.

Late last month, Portuguese oil and gas company Galp has confirmed that an Odfjell Drilling-managed semi-submersible rig, which made an oil discovery at a recently drilled well, will be relocating to another well situated within license PEL 83 offshore Namibia, close to discoveries made by European oil majors.
