Namport champions a greener future on world environment day 2025

As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) recently commemorated World Environment Day 2025 under the global theme “Combat Plastic Pollution.”

This year’s initiatives reaffirm Namport’s position as a leader in integrating sustainable development principles into port operations. Clean-up efforts were mobilized across both the Port of Walvis Bay and the Port of Lüderitz, uniting Namport employees, port users, and industry stakeholders, including Embwinda Fishing (Pty) Ltd.

These activities not only improved the physical environment but also reinforced a culture of environmental accountability across the Namibian port system. The coordinated campaign focused on reducing plastic waste in key operational areas— underscoring the role of collective responsibility in maintaining clean, safe, and efficient ports. From the northern stretches of Walvis Bay to the coastal perimeters of Lüderitz, the impact of these efforts was both visible and significant.

Driving Long-Term Change Through Internal Innovation

In line with its broader environmental agenda, Namport launched a three-month Paper Saving Competition, aimed at fostering resource efficiency across all departments. The initiative encourages the adoption of digital workflows, innovative paper-reduction strategies, and mindful printing practices, contributing to the Authority’s long-term sustainability goals. By measuring progress against a May 2025 paper usage baseline, the competition will not only reward outstanding reductions but also serve as a blueprint for future internal green practices.

Sustainability as a Strategic Imperative

Namport recognises that environmental stewardship is not confined to a single day of action but forms a year-round imperative aligned with national and global sustainability frameworks. As a key enabler of the Blue Economy, Namport continues to implement policies and practices that promote ecological responsibility while supporting trade, innovation, and regional development. Namport extends its appreciation to all employees, port users, and partners who participated in this year’s activities. These joint efforts reflect Namport’s strategic vision for building greener ports and contributing meaningfully to Namibia’s sustainable development agenda.
