Education and skill development are key to Namibia’s growth

By Kehad Snydewel

I recently had the pleasure of participating in the awards ceremony at the Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST) at their Faculty of Computing and Informatics. The dedication, resilience, and aspirations of the outstanding students within the Faculty of Computing and Informatics were celebrated. We often forget how much effort goes into excelling in our studies. Their hard work and pursuit of excellence brought them to this significant milestone, which will pave the way for even greater accomplishments in the future.

The Power of Support and Collaboration

No journey to success is a solitary endeavour. Behind every achievement is a network of support—families, friends, educators, mentors—all playing vital roles in shaping and encouraging these students. Success is built on the foundation of collaborative efforts; the NUST event proved that.

Recognizing the importance of community and mentorship is crucial in shaping the next generation of professionals. This support system fosters confidence and excellence, allowing individuals to strive for greatness in their chosen fields. These students represent the future leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers who will contribute to Namibia’s growth in the digital age. It is a crucial time for Namibia and its socioeconomic development, and today’s students will drive the economy tomorrow and beyond.

Embracing a Knowledge-Based Economy

For Namibia to thrive in the global knowledge economy, it must become a nation that prioritizes education and technology. The rapid evolution of the digital landscape demands adaptability, innovation, and expertise. By investing in education and fostering a culture that embraces technological advancements, as NUST does, allows Namibia to unlock its full potential.

Traditionally, careers in law, medicine, and accounting dominated aspirations of Namibian students, but the shift toward technology highlights the changing dynamics of global industries. The IT sector is expanding rapidly, and its role in shaping modern economies cannot be overstated. If we look at how Namibia is focused on becoming a ‘knowledge-based’ society, ICT careers will be one of the growth areas.

Lifelong Learning and Continuous Growth

As MD of a Green, I instill lifelong learning in my employees, especially the new recruits. In an ever-changing world driven by technological advancements, knowledge and adaptability remain the key drivers of success. The responsibility of shaping one’s future rests in the hands of each individual.

The rapid developments in artificial intelligence, software engineering, and digital transformation present limitless opportunities for those willing to embrace lifelong learning. As industries evolve, acquiring new skills and exploring diverse career paths is essential for staying ahead in a competitive landscape. Students and employees must understand that true excellence is reflected in the perseverance, resilience, and determination to overcome challenges. Pushing the boundaries of education and professional growth ultimately leads to lasting impact and transformation. Recognizing students’ achievements is the first step in encouraging them to continue the path of excellence and growth. This, in turn, sets Namibia on a path to excellence and growth.

The future is filled with promise, and Namibia’s emerging professionals can shape it with their expertise and vision. Every effort made today contributes to a greater tomorrow for Namibians and Namibia.
