The Rössing Foundation funds visually impaired student

The Rossing Foundation on February 4, 2025 handed over a full scholarship valued at N$200 000 to a visually impaired 2nd year Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) student Amy Andrew. The full scholarship (which includes tuition fees, a laptop with required software, custom bioptic telescope glasses and portable magnifier, internship), underscores the Foundation’s commitment to investing in students with disabilities by providing essential resources to excel in their academic journey.

Amy was born with congenital cataracts and was facing significant vision challenges. To ensure that Amy’s needs were correctly addressed, the Foundation collaborated with a South African based low vision institute for a thorough assessment that enabled correct prescription of her custom bioptic telescope glasses and portable magnifier.   it has been reported by the specialist that the prescriptions enhanced her vision to 6/7, allowing her to see distant objects with clarity.

Amy reported a significant improvement in her vision and expressed immense satisfaction with her new glasses, which have restored both her sight and her confidence to excel in her studies. “I won’t take this opportunity for granted, The Rössing Foundation has truly transformed my life”, says Amy during her testimonial speech at the official handover ceremony held at NUST last week.   Amy can now see clearly, allowing her to engage fully with her peers and participate in class activities on an equal footing.  This transformative experience will not only enhance her academic journey but also fosters her independence, enabling her to study at night without relying on others for help.

Continuing its support, the Rössing Foundation has offered Amy an internship opportunity during the holiday and will be placed in the Administration and Finance department. This opportunity is designed to provide invaluable on-the-job experience, further contributing to her personal and professional development.  As Amy embarks on her academic journey, the Rössing Foundation stands ready to support her every step of the way. The Foundation is confident that Amy will achieve distinctions and success, and is proud to contribute to her bright future.

In addition to Amy, the Foundation extended support to people with disabilities to the value of N$750 000 during 2024.   The Foundation is dedicated to empowering particularly girls and children with disabilities across various fields, including education, vocational training, agriculture, entrepreneurship, leadership, and innovation.

By fostering partnerships with like-minded organizations, the Foundation aims to achieve long-term impact and sustainability.  The Rössing Foundation thanks all partners and supporters for contribution to its mission of transforming lives.
