The Roads Authority (RA) has announced that, according to a survey done by Statista, Namibia has the best quality road infrastructure in Africa for 2024. In terms of road conditions and extensiveness, the country reached an index rating of 5.57 on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Egypt and Benin followed with scores of 5.53 and 5.00, respectively.
This accolade reaffirms the Government of the Republic of Namibia’s commitment to road infrastructure development and the RA’s years of dedicated work in road construction, maintenance, preservation, and innovative road transport interventions.
“Namibia has remarkably improved road quality, safety, and accessibility. Our roads now set a standard for design and sustainability that supports the safe and efficient movement of people, goods and services across the nation,” Dr Conrad Lutombi, RA CEO, noted. However, he added that Namibia must not become complacent when investing in road infrastructure. Sufficient and sustainable funding is needed to maintain Namibia’s top position. Failure to do so may have catastrophic consequences on our socio-economic growth. Similarly, Dr Lutombi appealed to the public to help care for our road infrastructure and keep our road reserve clean. He noted that, unfortunately, there is still a problem with littering, vandalism of road signs and fences, and unauthorized construction in the road reserve.
Furthermore, Dr Lutombi thanked the Government of the Republic of Namibia, the Road Fund Administration, local authority municipalities, road users and all other stakeholders for contributing to this praiseworthy achievement. “Together, we can ensure that our road network remains safe, reliable, and durable for generations to come, ” Dr Lutombi concluded.
Namibia also retained its status as having the best roads on the African continent, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF) ratings of 2023, where the country scored 5.2 out of 7.
