The Keetmanshoop Municipality in conjunction with Leo Canopus has launched the town’s Free Community WIFI Project which is set to improve commercial activity and economic growth of the town.
Speaking at the launch, the Mayor of Keetmanshoop, Mcdonald Hanse on Friday said that the launch was a culmination of a lot of dreaming, hard work and determination by these two parties.
“For a long time, it seems as if it was just not going to be possible but they persevered through COVID-19 and various other challenges because they believe that access to information is a basic human right. Personally, the most salient selling point was the reported difference that the pilot project made in the lives of students living in TransNamib, Tseiblaagte.
“It is off course possible that this hard worn resource can be used for all the wrong reasons, such as social media, games and inappropriate content. I, thus want to call on the educators seated here today to drive the message home that this free service should be used for research purposes to improve our examination results,” Hanse said.
The project is still in its infancy and many of the envisaged advantages for the municipality as an entity are still untapped.
“However, this dedicated team is hard at work to exploit the benefits such as remote meter readings, to name but one. The Keetmanshoop Municipal Council is proud and grateful for the opportunity to work with Leo Canopus, who have proven themselves to be at the forefront of digitalizing communities in Namibia. They were instrumental in the implementation of similar projects in Windhoek, Otavi and Okahandja as well,” further stated Hanse.
