The University of Namibia has announced the introduction of its Corporate Work Integrated Education (CWIE) Programme, commencing in 2025. This mandatory programme, a key component of UNAM’s newly transformed curriculum launched in 2023, requires all undergraduate students to complete practical work experience in their third year.
Students on the newly transformed curriculum will be in their third year in 2025. Approximately 2,963 students from diverse fields, including agriculture, engineering, natural sciences, commerce, management, law, education and human sciences to health sciences and veterinary medicine, will seek placements.
The initiative, also known as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), allows students to integrate academic learning with professional work environments, enhancing their readiness for Namibia’s and global evolving job market. The CWIE programme embodies UNAM’s dedication to preparing “future ready” graduates equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that meet industry needs. This hands-on engagement aligns with UNAM’s strategic goal to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional application.
“The Work Integrated Learning programme is an invaluable bridge between theory and practice,” said Professor Frednard Gideon, UNAM’s Pro-Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. “Our aim is to nurture graduates who are work-ready and adaptable, equipped with skills to make immediate contributions to their industries. “This programme brings mutual benefits to both students and industry partners by creating a platform for learning and innovation.”
Benefits for industry and reciprocal advantages
The CWIE programme offers substantial benefits for UNAM’s industry partners. Employers gain early access to talented students, gaining firsthand insights into their skills, work ethic, and potential as future employees. Through CWIE, companies can also address skills gaps in their workforce by identifying interns who may grow into permanent roles. This allows organisations to reduce recruitment costs and minimise the risk of hiring by training students directly within their fields.
UNAM’s CWIE programme was developed with a focus on impact, experience, quality, and efficiency. This approach maximises benefits for students and partners alike while ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with UNAM’s mission to support national and global goals for development.
Transforming curricula for modern demands
Since 2023, UNAM has implemented a transformed curricula designed to address the demands of the 4th and 5th Industrial Revolutions. The programmes are registered by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), and they align with Namibia’s national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Where applicable, curricula for professional programmes are approved by the relevant professional bodies before implementation. These programmes develop not only professional skills but also core competencies such as ethics, sustainability, and project management, all essential for 21st-century leaders.
