HyIron Oshivela has won the prestigious His Excellency Hage Geingob Award: Namibian Hydrogen Project of the Year at the Global African Hydrogen Summit in Windhoek.
Launched in November 2023, the HyIron Oshivela project located in the Erongo region near Arandis, is Africa’s first industrial-scale production of iron with zero emissions, using green hydrogen to reduce iron ore in a carbon-neutral process. This groundbreaking project advances global decarbonisation efforts, replacing tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions for every tonne of iron produced.
The award recognises HyIron Oshivela’s impact on Namibia’s hydrogen sector, highlighting its role in driving innovation, community and youth engagement, promoting local content and knowledge transfer through people development.
Handing over the award to the HyIron Oshivela Country Manager Johannes Michels, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo highlighted that the company has not only fostered technical expertise but also strengthened commercial capabilities in the sector.
Other nominees in this category were Cleanergy Solutions Namibia and Daures Green Hydrogen Village. HyIron Oshivela is an investment project proudly facilitated by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB).
