Erastus Uutoni the Minister of Urban and Rural Development has called on various stakeholders involved in the delivery of affordable housing to Namibians, to unite in purpose in order to enhance chances of succeeding in this endeavour.
He noted that chances for greater success in this quest require unity of purpose and collaboration between the Government at all levels (central, regional and local levels as well as development financing institutions), members of the community, the private sector notably the construction industry and financial institutions as well as non-governmental partners.
“We need to pull together and in the same direction in order to ensure efficiency and effectiveness as well as greater and coordinated impact.
Therefore, I have continuously called on role players to bring their part on board. It is only when the land is reasonably priced by local authorities that lower income groups will subsequently be able to afford houses constructed by the NHE. I also would like to remind you that we should not forget that both the NHE and Local Authorities are part of the same government, serving the same people, striving to achieve the same thing. Therefore, if we collaborate well, our people will benefit, we will make a lasting impact in the provision of housing to the Namibian people,” decried Uutoni.
He went on to highlight that decent shelter is a basic necessity of life, and as a Government of the people, government believe that it is justified for the citizens as the sovereign to expect to have a place that they call their own and to meet their dwelling and survival needs.
In keeping with this reality and commitment to the people of Namibia, he added that housing remains one of government’s key development priorities as clearly articulated in national development frameworks namely Vision 2023, national development plans and the Harambee Prosperity Plan 2.
“I also wish to use this opportunity to continue pleading with all our local authorities to offer land to the NHE at the lowest prices possible, so that there is a bit of a reduction in the input cost, and subsequently better selling price. This is why in this whole process, as stakeholders being the National Housing Enterprise, the Local Authority, and the Contractors that we bring on board, to all work with a common purpose of delivering quality but affordable homes to our people.
“Our Government and its agencies are really trying to provide you and others with the opportunity to prove yourself and be consistent in delivering whatever services you are contracted to provide. Thus, the delivery of quality and up to standard work is of utmost importance to continue build trust for your companies in order to eliminate the need to give work to foreign entities,” he said.
