In an internally directed philanthropic move, Mobile Telecommunications Ltd, MTC Namibia has announced that it has allocated a total of N$950 000 to support the part-time business activities of its employees, through the MTC Dreamers Program.
Giving insight on the program, MTC’s Chief Brand, Marketing, Communications, and Sustainability Officer, Tim Ekandjo expressed that “Just as we are philanthropic to the nation, we are also extending the same courtesy and creating a sustainable value chain for our own ambassador. The MTC Dreamers Program was established in 2021 to aid by means of funds and entrepreneurial training for employees who are actively pursuing their own dreams and aspirations of owning their own businesses as side hassles. Thus far, the program has assisted eighty MTC ambassador at the cost of N$4million.”
To benefit from the program, Ekandjo explained that “ambassadors (employees) are expected to apply and pitch their business ideas before an evaluation committee of internal experts. This year, 75 applications were reviewed, and eighteen were successful. Of this total, thirteen dreamers in the entrepreneurship category were awarded N$50 000 each, four in the Talent development category received N$30 000, and one ambassador awarded N$60 000 in a social cause category. Additionally, all successful applicants will receive three days’ entrepreneurship training to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to make their businesses successful.”
A previous program beneficiary, Hilaria Nghiikoko, who is currently running a successful mini-market at her village in Okongo, expressed gratitude – stating that the funding support that she received saw her establish a mini-shop that sell daily basic products, bringing the services closer to the villagers who use to travel a long distance to the nearest town.”
“As a former beneficiary, I am grateful for the support to pursue my personal dream of owning my own business. Now, I not just able to earn an extra income, but I have also managed to create employment opportunities for others and adding value in society.”
Bertha Nangombe, one of the beneficiaries enthused “I am excited and grateful for the opportunity. This support from the Dreamers’ Project is an injection that will aid in translating my dream of clothing and feeding the vulnerable into reality. This is an opportunity that I am taking very seriously, and excited to be expanding my social project.”
