NamWater has announced the commencement of the Ondangwa-Omutsegwonime pipeline replacement project with a groundbreaking ceremony held today at NamWater offices in Ondangwa. This significant event marks the beginning of Phase 1, focusing on the critical 17-kilometer stretch from Ondangwa to Oshali.
The Ondangwa-Omutsegwonime bulk water supply scheme, known as the South East (SE) scheme, is a vital lifeline for the Oshana and Oshikoto regions. Conveying potable water over 110 kilometers, it serves both urban centers and rural areas, ensuring reliable water supply to numerous towns and villages. The current infrastructure, however, is struggling to meet the escalating demand and is plagued by frequent pipe bursts and supply interruptions.
Abraham Nehemia, Chief Executive Officer of NamWater, in providing a strategic overview emphasized the importance of the project: “As the CEO of NamWater, it is my privilege to welcome you to this momentous occasion, which is the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ondangwa-Omutsegwonime pipeline. This project marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance water security and support sustainable development in the Oshana and Oshikoto regions.”
Recognizing the pressing need for reliable water infrastructure, Hon. Elia Irimari, Governor of the Oshana Region,remarked: “It is an honor and a privilege to welcome you all here today to the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ondangwa-Omutsegwonime pipeline replacement project. This replacement is not merely an upgrade; it is a commitment to ensuring reliable water supply for our communities, a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development.”
Calle Schlettwein, Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform,in delivering his keynote address and in officiating the ground breaking highlighted the strategic importance of the project: “This project signifies more than just infrastructure development; it represents a decisive step towards securing a sustainable and reliable water supply for our communities. Investing in this water infrastructure means investing in the people of this great nation.”
The design for the replacement pipeline has been meticulously crafted by the civil team in NamWater’s Engineering Services Team, showcasing the corporation’s competence and efficiency. The contract for the construction of the Ondangwa-Oshali section has been awarded to Homefin Properties cc, a reputable Namibian company with a diverse range of experience, in partnership with China Jiangxi International Element. The project is fully funded by NamWater at a value of 91 million NAD and is expected to be completed within 12 months.
