Kelp Blue recognised as top innovator for carbon removal

Kelp Blue, a company headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands and with their offices in Luderitz, Namibia has been recognized as a top innovator for carbon removal in X’s top 100 rankings.

Founded in 2020, Kelp Blue has been leading the way in sustainable innovation, dedicated to restoring marine biodiversity, promoting carbon sequestration, and fostering a healthier ocean ecosystem.

Kelp Blue cultivates giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) off the coast of Namibia, New Zealand and soon Alaska. Our offshore farms overcome scaling limits of sheltered water, whilst benefiting from local nutrient upwelling systems. The kelp grows on our innovative submerged structures, ultimately forming a canopy at the surface. The canopy biomass is trimmed and processed into sustainable products for agriculture and packaging.

Kelp Blue is now poised to develop the world’s first large-scale kelp farm off the coast of Namibia, near Luderitz. Not only is Kelp Blue making waves in sustainability, but they are also creating tangible economic impact, with the project already generating 45 permanent direct positions in Lüderitz and two additional roles in Windhoek.

XPRIZE Carbon Removal, backed by Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation, aims to tackle climate change head-on by rebalancing Earth’s carbon cycle.
