Bank Windhoek has reiterated that loss from its Opuwo Branch incident is not N$200 million as widely claimed, but falls below N$2 million.
“Bank Windhoek has noted an increasing misinterpretation of facts surrounding the theft incident at the Opuwo Branch on January 13, 2024, leading to confusion regarding the amounts involved. In light of this, we aim to provide clarity on the matter. It is crucial to understand that there was an attempted theft of N$200 million by the suspect.
“However, thanks to our robust security protocols, strong internal controls, established thresholds, and the vigilance of our employees, this attempt was thwarted. The actual confirmed loss to the Bank, as stated in our previous media statement, amounts to just below N$2 million and could only be confirmed in the days following the incident, the Bank said in a statement.
The Bank went on to say that given the advanced stage of the investigation, it would be unwise for Bank Windhoek to disclose further details, which could compromise the ongoing efforts of the Namibian Police Force (NAMPOL).
“Our primary focus remains on collaborating with NAMPOL to ensure a thorough and successful resolution of the matter. We express our gratitude to the Namibian Police, our board of directors, our dedicated employees, and valued customers for their continued support and cooperation.
“If any member of the public has any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining culprits, you are kindly urged to share information at your nearest police station. Bank Windhoek is offering a reward of N$20,000, facilitated through NAMPOL, to anyone with information that will lead to the successful apprehension of the main suspect,” further said the Bank.
