NamWater, Northern Governors push to accelerate critical water projects

NamWater has held high-level strategic talks with the Governors of Ohangwena and Oshikoto regions, focusing on expediting vital water supply projects to combat persistent shortages and bolster long-term water security in the drought-stricken north.

The state-owned water utility hosted Governor of Ohangwena, Hon. Kadiva Hamutumwa, and Governor of Oshikoto, Hon. Sacky Kathindi, for a courtesy and strategic engagement meeting on 22 July 2025. Central to the discussions was the urgent need to accelerate key infrastructure developments.

Several critical projects were identified as priorities. The Ohangwena II Aquifer Project, now nearing completion, is expected to alleviate water supply gaps in the Omafo–Eenhana, Omakango–Onambutu, and surrounding eastern areas. Similarly, the Ondangwa–Oshali Pipeline & Pump Station Upgrade, also close to finalisation, aims to enhance service delivery within the Ondangwa South-East Scheme.

Further projects discussed include the Omundaungilo–Omutsegwonime Bulk Water Supply Scheme, designed to channel water from the Ohangwena II aquifer towards Oshikoto and boost supply in the Central North Areas. The Oshivelo–King Kauluma Water Supply Project, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, will connect boreholes to improve access for underserved communities around King Kauluma. Additionally, the replacement of the Oshakati–Ondangwa and Ondangwa to Omutsegwonime pipelines is planned to strengthen backbone infrastructure and increase the resilience of the national water supply system.

Both Governors Hamutumwa and Kathindi strongly reaffirmed their commitment to fast-tracking water infrastructure development and pledged continued support to NamWater. They emphasised that reliable water access is a critical enabler of national development and called for enhanced coordination among all stakeholders involved in water project planning and execution.

NamWater reiterated its dedication to fulfilling its mandate through partnerships, innovation, and responsible water resource management. The utility stressed that close collaboration with regional leadership is essential to ensure sustainable, clean, and reliable water access for all communities in Ohangwena, Oshikoto, and across Namibia
