The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) participated in the 2026 Namibia Mining Expo, using the platform to engage industry stakeholders on the future of mining, worker empowerment and the importance of ensuring that Namibia’s mining sector continues to deliver inclusive and sustainable development.
Throughout the three-day Expo, MUN engaged with government representatives, mining companies, organised labour, development partners, educational institutions and members of the public. The engagements focused on strengthening collaboration across the mining value chain while reinforcing the important role workers play in supporting productivity, responsible mining and the long-term sustainability of the industry.
As one of Namibia’s leading labour organisations, MUN used the Expo to highlight the importance of protecting workers’ rights while embracing innovation and industry transformation. Discussions centred on workplace safety, skills development, decent work, social dialogue and preparing mineworkers for the changing demands of the global mining industry.
The Expo also provided an opportunity for the union to strengthen relationships with existing stakeholders while establishing new partnerships that support worker development, industry stability and sustainable economic growth. MUN reaffirmed that meaningful collaboration between government, employers, organised labour and communities remains essential to building a resilient mining sector that benefits all Namibians.
Among the key issues discussed were the impact of technological advancement, automation and the global energy transition on the future of work. MUN emphasised the importance of investing in continuous learning, reskilling and workforce development to ensure that mineworkers are equipped to participate meaningfully in an evolving industry.
The union further highlighted that responsible mining extends beyond mineral production and economic returns. It also requires a continued commitment to safe working environments, fair labour practices, social investment and community development, recognising that sustainable growth is achieved when workers and communities grow alongside the industry.
Reflecting on the importance of the Expo, Acting President of the Mineworkers Union of Namibia, Poco-Key Mberiuana, said: “The Namibia Mining Expo provides an important platform for government, industry and organized labour to shape the future of our mining sector. As the industry evolves through technological advancement and changing labour markets, we must ensure that workers are not left behind. Worker empowerment must extend beyond wages and working conditions to include education, skills development and opportunities that prepare people for the future of work. By investing in workers, we strengthen our industry, our communities and Namibia’s long-term development.”
