Prof Frednard Gideon assumes office as Vice-Chancellor at NUST

Following the Interim Council’s announcement of the appointment of Prof Frednard Gideon as Vice-Chancellor on 29 April 2026, the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) is pleased to announce that Prof Gideon officially assumed office on 01 August 2026, in accordance with the Council’s resolution.

Prof Gideon brings more than 25 years of distinguished experience in higher education, including 17 years in academic leadership and 11 years in executive leadership at the University of Namibia (UNAM). Throughout his career, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to academic excellence, institutional transformation, research, innovation, and the advancement of higher education. His leadership philosophy is underpinned by a strong belief in inclusive education, innovation, digital transformation, and the cultivation of strategic partnerships that create meaningful impact for society.

An accomplished academic and executive leader, Prof Gideon holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Mathematics, a Master of Science in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). His extensive experience spans university governance, strategic planning, research development, academic administration, and stakeholder engagement, positioning him well to lead NUST through its next phase of institutional growth and global competitiveness. To mark the commencement of his tenure, the University hosted a Welcoming Ceremony today, 04 August 2026.

The occasion formally introduced Prof Gideon to the University community and reaffirmed NUST’s collective commitment to advancing its vision as Namibia’s leading university of science and technology. The Interim Council regards Prof Gideon’s appointment as timely in the University’s evolution and a pivotal moment positioning NUST for its next phase of strategic growth. His appointment coincides with the implementation of the Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP) 2026 – 2030, which sets an ambitious agenda for institutional transformation, innovation, and sustainable impact. Under this new strategic cycle, NUST will accelerate efforts to expand its national footprint through increased access to quality higher education, strengthen its contribution to Namibia’s socio-economic development, deepen research and innovation, enhance international partnerships, and further consolidate its position as a globally competitive university.

Central to this vision is reinforcing NUST’s distinctive mandate as Namibia’s premier university of applied science and technology – one that delivers future-focused education, produces industry-ready graduates, drives cutting-edge research and innovation, and develops practical solutions to national, regional, and global challenges. As the Interim Council, we are confident that, under Prof Gideon’s leadership, NUST will continue to build on its strong institutional foundations, foster a culture of excellence and innovation, and strengthen its role as a leading university of science and technology in Africa.
