The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) has announced the appointment of Professor Frednand Gideon as its new substantive Vice-Chancellor, ending months of acting leadership at the institution’s helm.
The appointment, effective from 1 August 2026, was unanimously approved by the NUST Council following a rigorous and transparent recruitment process led by a Joint Search Committee in collaboration with an external executive recruitment agency.
Professor Gideon brings an extensive academic and leadership track record to the position, having accumulated over 25 years of experience in academia. This includes 17 years in academic leadership roles and 11 years of executive leadership. He has also served on university councils for approximately 14 years and been a member of senate for about 17 years. In addition, he has served on six external boards and has acted as vice chancellor on numerous occasions.
He holds a PhD in mathematics, a Master of Science in Mathematics, a Bachelor Honours in Applied Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science in Physics, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He has also earned two certificates in executive leadership and one in project management, and is currently pursuing a PhD in business management. At present, he manages 12 campuses with over 30,000 students.
Dr Leake S Hangala, Chairperson of the NUST Council, expressed confidence in the new Vice-Chancellor’s ability to steer the university towards greater heights.
“His leadership comes at a pivotal time for the university as we continue to expand our academic offerings, enhance research impact, and contribute meaningfully to national development,” Dr Hangala said. “We are confident that under his stewardship, NUST will reach new heights of excellence and relevance.”
Professor Gideon takes over from Professor Andrew Nilkondo, who has been acting in the position since October 2025. Professor Nilkondo’s steady leadership and contributions to ensuring smooth transitions have been sincerely acknowledged by the university, particularly as he also oversaw the handover of power when the former vice chancellor took office in 2020.
