In a significant step for her burgeoning career, Georgina Likukela, a current student of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF), has been appointed as the new Programme Coordinator for the Filmmaker’s Association of Namibia (FAN). The appointment signals a rising star taking on a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s creative industry.
Expressing deep honour at the appointment, Likukela stated that being chosen while still completing her MTF training was a profound affirmation. “It reminded me that even as I’m learning, my voice and purpose matter,” she said. “It encouraged me but also humbled me because I know this role is bigger than me. It’s about serving my community and opening doors for others.”
In her new capacity, Likukela has outlined clear, impactful priorities centred on nurturing Namibian talent. “My responsibilities include championing authentic stories, creating real support for emerging filmmakers and helping build a more sustainable industry,” she explained. Her goal is to ensure young creatives “feel seen, guided and empowered,” mirroring the support she has received from MTF.
She credits her MTF training with providing crucial skills, highlighting scriptwriting for structure and directing for empathetic leadership. “Beyond creativity, I’m learning how the industry works, and most importantly, the technical principles needed to approach filmmaking with confidence,” Likukela reflected.
However, she is clear-eyed about the challenges ahead. While seeing “incredible talent” in Namibia, she acknowledges systemic gaps. “To fix this, we need more mentorship, stronger partnerships and systems that help creatives build sustainable careers,” she asserted.
Her commitment extends beyond her new office. Likukela is also the driving force behind “Creatives Coming Out,” an annual artist development programme empowering rural creatives. “This year, we decided to launch in the Zambezi Region, my home,” she shared proudly, demonstrating her dedication to grassroots development.
With a blend of passion and practical vision, Georgina Likukela is not merely filling a position; she is actively working to shape the future of Namibian storytelling.
