Excellence has been rewarded at the University of Namibia, with 42 academic and research staff members achieving promotion across multiple faculties and units in 2025. The milestone reflects exceptional achievements in teaching, research and service, while reinforcing UNAM’s position as a leader in developing and retaining top-tier academic talent.
From newly minted professors to rising associate professors and senior lecturers, these promotions span disciplines from agriculture and engineering to health sciences and education, marking one of UNAM’s most significant recognition exercises this year. Academic promotions are a common practice at universities worldwide. They represent the formal progression of academics through ranks such as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor.
Promotions typically come about through a structured process of application, internal and external evaluation, based on achievements in research, teaching and community engagement/service. They not only reward dedication but also ensure that universities maintain international standards of scholarship and leadership.
- The Faculty of Agriculture, Engineering & Natural Sciences leads with 15 promotions, including two full Professors and 6 Associate Professors, and an Associate Research Professor.
- The Faculty of Health Sciences & Veterinary Medicine follows with 14 promotions, highlighted by five Clinical Senior Lecturers and several Associate Professors and a full professor.
- The Faculty of Education & Human Sciences records 7 promotions, while the Faculty of Commerce, Management & Law advances 3 staff, including 2 Associate Professors.
- The Library and the Zero Emissions Research Initiative (ZERI) also proudly see 3 members elevated.
According to Prof. Frednard Gideon, Pro-Vice Chancellor: Academic Affairs, “These promotions affirm the calibre and commitment of our staff, and the University’s responsibility to nurture and retain such talent. “Academic growth and staff development are central to UNAM’s strategy, and we continue to support our staff through postgraduate studies, mentorship and research opportunities.
“While retaining high-level academic expertise carries a substantial cost, the benefits are immeasurable, from improved teaching quality to stronger research outputs and national impact. “Promotions such as these strengthen UNAM’s reputation and ensure that our institution remains a centre of academic excellence for Namibia and beyond.”
